  • I'm a Winner, You're a Winner
    By Ben Phipps

The book is about remembering how great you are. It is a story of a team of young basketball players who meet their coach and learn that they are winners, what it means to be a winner, and different messages about being a winner. The book is based on my experiences coaching my son’s 3rd and 4th grade basketball team. I started the season wanting to develop a positive winning attitude with the players. Which included an attitude of giving their best, as well as, an attitude of respect for the game and their teammates. And in doing so I decided it was important to tell them they were already winners and how great they were. Why? I was going to be challenging and correcting them. Kids are always being corrected. So, I wanted to start with a foundation of understanding that I knew how great they were by telling them they were great (winners), and now we need to work hard on their basketball game.
I had the players do an assignment based on what we discussed during the season. From this assignment I was able to get at least one unique quote from each player that could be placed in the book. I thought they would enjoy seeing their name and quote in a book. My original intention was to create a story that I could hand out to the players at the end of the season, and if it people liked it I would try to turn it in to an actual book. As I developed the story after the season, other messages I wish I shared with the team during the season came out. Although a kids story, I felt the message was good for adults as well, thus the “for kids ages 7 to 107” was placed on the cover. The book is a good reminder that inside each of us is the winner we were born as, waiting to be remembered.
