    Hygiene Innovations, Inc. (HII) of Glen Head, N.Y. has introduced an innovative new baby care product, Pipila, to the U.S. mass market. Pipila is a compact, portable pacifier sterilizer that was developed in Australia. It kills up to 99.9% of germs on a pacifier and operates on two AAA batteries, so it can be used anywhere and it’s compact enough to fit easily in a diaper bag. Pipila accommodates most standard-size baby pacifiers and the sterilization process takes just five minutes from start to finish.


    Improved hygiene and control of germs has become a major focus in many different product categories — antibacterial soap and antibacterial wipes are good examples. For years parents would give their babies’ a pacifier without thinking about the fact that they can pick up germs and provide a breeding ground for harmful microbes. Moreover, because babies’ immune systems deteriorate to 35% of the level at birth in the first three months of life and then slowly recover to 55% at 18 months, they are extremely vulnerable to infection and illness during that period. Consumers are becoming much more conscious of cleanliness issues, and this product directly addresses those concerns.

    Pipila is unique in this market. It uses a patented UV/O3 (ozone) sterilizing lamp that combines ultraviolet light and ozone to penetrate and rupture the cell walls of germs and then attack and destroy the DNA. in the cell nucleus. By the way, ozone is a naturally occurring molecule that is harmless to humans. Once it attacks germs, it breaks down into oxygen. Once the pacifier is inserted into Pipila, one push activates the sterilization process, which takes just five minutes.
